The myth of the cave

Tra il 390 ed il 360 a.C. Platone elabora e scrive il mito della caverna con cui, attraverso un allegoria, spiega come il filosofo acquisisca il sapere necessario per ben governare la città, liberandosi dalle opinioni e accedendo alla conoscenza della realtà.
Alcuni uomini sono incatenati fin dall’infanzia in una caverna costretti a guardare solo verso la parete di fondo. All’uscita della caverna vi è un muretto dietro il quale altri uomini trasportano sulle spalle delle statuette che rappresentano ogni genere di cose. Dietro questi uomini arde un grande fuoco ed in cielo splende il sole.
Il fuoco proietta sul fondo della caverna solo le ombre delle statuette, perché gli uomini che le trasportano sono nascosti dal muretto. Le loro voci rimbombano come eco sul fondo della caverna, per cui i prigionieri pensano che siano le voci delle ombre delle statuette.
I prigionieri sono dunque convinti che le ombre proiettate sul fondo della caverna siano l’unica realtà esistente.
….Uno dei prigionieri riesce a liberarsi.
Egli si volta, va verso l’uscita della caverna e scopre che le statuette e non le ombre sono la realtà.
Uscendo dalla caverna all’esterno scopre che nemmeno le statuette sono la realtà, ma solo imitazioni delle cose reali.
Dopo essersi abituato a quella luce abbagliante alla quale non era abituato, scopre che tutte le cose sono visibili grazie alla luce del sole. Vorrebbe rimanere fuori per sempre, ma poi si ricorda della situazione terribile dei suoi compagni e torna da loro per spiegargli la verità.
Tornato si accorge che i suoi occhi, ormai abbagliati dalla luce, non distinguono più le ombre delle statuette. Allora i compagni ridono di lui e lo disprezzano e infastiditi del suo tentativo di scioglierli e di portarli fuori dalla caverna, lo uccidono.
Anche se Platone ha elaborato questo concetto filosofico cosi attuale circa 3000 anni fa , oggi viviamo in un mondo in cui la maggior parte degli uomini ha scelto di diventare “lo schiavo incatenato” e pochissimi, quasi nessuno, di intraprendere la strada del flosofo per raggiungere la conoscenza reale.
Grazie ai media abbiamo esattamente realizzato questo mito in chiave contemporanea, partendo dall’uso dei social media i cui contenuti spesso non coincidono assolutamante con la realta’ del “mondo di fuori”.

Between 390 and 360 BC. Plato elaborates and writes the myth of the cave with which, through an allegory, he explains how the philosopher acquires the knowledge necessary to govern the city well, freeing himself from opinions and accessing the knowledge of reality.
Some men have been chained since childhood in a cave and forced to look only towards the back wall. At the exit of the cave there is a low wall behind which other men carry on their shoulders statuettes representing all kinds of things. Behind these men a great fire burns and the sun shines in the sky.
The fire projects only the shadows of the statuettes onto the bottom of the cave, because the men carrying them are hidden by the low wall. Their voices echo like echoes at the bottom of the cave, so the prisoners think they are the voices of the shadows of the statuettes.
The prisoners are therefore convinced that the shadows projected on the bottom of the cave are the only reality that exists.
….One of the prisoners manages to free himself.
He turns, goes towards the exit of the cave and discovers that the statuettes and not the shadows are reality.
Coming out of the cave outside he discovers that not even the statuettes are reality, but only imitations of real things.
After getting used to that dazzling light to which he was not accustomed, he discovers that all things are visible thanks to the light of the sun. He would like to stay out forever, but then he remembers the terrible situation of his companions and returns to them to explain the truth.
When he returns he realizes that his eyes, now dazzled by the light, can no longer distinguish the shadows of the statuettes. Then his companions laugh at him and despise him and, annoyed by his attempt to untie them and take them out of the cave, they kill him.
